Cheerful, lively, and active, these dogs make wonderful companions for the entire family, from the youngest to the eldest. Members of this breed don’t just tolerate children; they genuinely love spending time with them, eagerly joining in on all their mischief. They are affectionate and good-natured, getting along easily with other pets, whether cats or other dogs. Thanks to their compact size, they are ideal for families living in smaller city flats where space is at a premium. Find out more at Tvaryny.

Despite its volume, their coat has almost no characteristic “doggy” smell, even when wet – definitely a huge advantage for people with sensitive noses. Another historical feature of these dogs is their ringing voice. While a loud bark might annoy neighbours in a block of flats, it is part of their nature. However, with proper upbringing and an understanding of dog psychology, the Spitz will use it only for its intended purpose – to warn owners of strangers approaching, acting as a reliable “living alarm system”.

Medium German Spitz (Mittelspitz): A Brief Breed Overview

Characteristic

Data

Origin

Germany (Central Europe)

First Mention (Standard)

1898-1899

Life Expectancy

12-15 years (often reaching 16-18)

Height at Withers

30-38 cm (according to updated FCI standard)

Weight

7-11 kg (depends on height and bone structure)

FCI Group

Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types)

Purpose

Companion dog, watchdog

History: From Peat Dog to Modern Mittel

The homeland of the Spitz is Germany, though the roots of this breed group go much deeper into history. It is believed that their direct ancestors were the so-called “Peat Dogs” (Canis familiaris palustris), remains of which are found in Stone Age pile-dwelling settlements. This makes the Spitz one of the oldest forms of domestic dogs, retaining their primeval appearance almost unchanged. They are not the result of complex selective breeding or crossing dozens of breeds – they are a natural, aboriginal type of European dog.

These days, Mittelspitzes are mostly bought as sofa companions, Instagram stars, and loyal friends for park walks. But in the past, they had a very different purpose. They were the working dogs of peasants and artisans (“the commoner’s dog”). As watchdogs, thanks to their ringing bark and incredibly sensitive hearing, these dogs provided timely warnings of strangers or wild animals approaching their owners’ homes, vineyards, and pastures. They had no right to make mistakes or sleep on the job.

Interestingly, unlike herding dogs, the Spitz lacks a hunting instinct – this was a crucial requirement for selection. A dog guarding the courtyard shouldn’t run off into the woods after a hare or strangle the farm chickens. That is why modern Mittels feel so comfortable next to other small animals.

Official recognition came later. In 1899, the “Verein für Deutsche Spitze” club was established in Germany, where the first standards for the “Spitz” breed were developed. It was then that the division of dogs into different size categories began to preserve the diversity of the population – from miniature to large representatives.

What the Mittelspitz Looks Like: Detailed Description

The Mittelspitz is a compact dog with a square build that radiates confidence and dignity. A “square build” means the dog’s height at the withers is approximately equal to the length of its body. This gives the animal excellent manoeuvrability and endurance.

Head and Muzzle

The head is proportional to the body, wedge-shaped, resembling a fox. This is one of the breed’s trademarks – a cunning, intelligent “foxy” expression. The transition from forehead to muzzle (stop) is smooth but clearly visible, not abrupt. The muzzle is of moderate length, not too sharp, but not “blunt” either. The nose is small and round. A pure black nose is desirable, although in brown dogs, it may be dark brown to harmonise with the coat colour.

Eyes and Ears

The ears are small, triangular, set high and close together. They always stand vertically with stiff, pointed tips, giving the dog a constantly alert look. The eyes are medium-sized, almond-shaped or slightly oval, and dark in colour. The eyelids are black (dark brown in brown dogs) and fit tightly, preventing the frequent inflammation typical of breeds with droopy eyes.

Body and Limbs

The neck is of medium length, dry, without a dewlap, slightly arched at the nape. The main decoration of the neck is the fur, which forms a luxurious, fluffy collar resembling a lion’s mane. The back is short, strong, and perfectly straight. The chest is well-developed, deep, and of moderate width. The tail is the pride of the Spitz. It is of medium length, set high, and curled in a ring over the back, lying firmly against it. It is covered with very long, fluffy hair, creating a pom-pom effect.

The limbs are straight, parallel to each other, with strong bone structure. Joint angles are moderate, providing the dog with light, springy movement. The paws are small and round (“cat paws”), with toes arched and tight, and claws are strong, often black.

Coat Type and Structure

The Spitz has a double coat. It consists of long, straight top guard hair that stands off the body, and a short, very dense, cotton-like undercoat. It is the undercoat that “holds” the guard hair, creating that voluminous silhouette. On the muzzle, ears, and the front of the legs, the hair is short, dense, and velvety to the touch. Lush “trousers” form on the hind legs.

Mittelspitz Colours

The colour palette of the Medium Spitz is impressively diverse. The standard allows for:

Black: Deep, lacquered black without rusty patches; the skin under the coat is also dark.

White: Pure white, without yellowing, especially on the ears (which happens frequently).

Brown: Uniform dark chocolate shade.

Orange: Bright, rich colour ranging from light cream to deep red.

Grey-shaded (Wolf-grey): Silver-grey with black hair tips. A dark “mask” on the muzzle and “spectacles” around the eyes are mandatory.

Other colours: This includes cream, black and tan, and particolour (where the main background is white and patches are black, brown, grey, or orange).

Varieties: The Mittel’s Place in the Spitz Family

Confusion often arises between the different types of German Spitz. It is important to understand that this is one breed, divided by size varieties. If the Giant German Spitz (Grossspitz) feels a bit too large for your flat, and the Pomeranian seems too fragile and decorative, then the Mittelspitz is the “golden mean”.

Below is a comparison table of adjacent size categories to help you decide:

Spitz Variety

Height at Withers

Features

Large (Grossspitz)

40-50 cm

Rare, calmer, closer to working dogs.

Medium (Mittelspitz)

30-38 cm

Ideal balance of activity and size.

Small (Kleinspitz)

23-29 cm

More excitable, but compact.

Character: Temperament, Intelligence and Behaviour

Dogs of the Mittelspitz breed are among the most loyal representatives of the canine world. They become strongly attached not only to their owner but also to “their” territory, meaning the house they live in. They are possessive by nature. It is important for them to control the perimeter and know that the whole “pack” is safe.

These dogs require regular care and emotional contact. They are very jealous, it’s true. Therefore, in case of a lack of attention from the owner or the appearance of a new favourite in the family, they will definitely show their displeasure – they might demonstratively ignore commands or even engage in petty mischief. If the Medium Spitz feels the owner’s love fully, he transforms into an ideal creature: affectionate, compliant, cheerful, and incredibly friendly.

Mittelspitzes have a very firm, sometimes even dominant and independant character. Despite their small size, they feel confident in any situation. They do not have “small dog syndrome”. They are always ready to stand up for their owners. Of course, their guarding qualities differ from serious service breeds. If you need powerful protection, you should consider a Giant Schnauzer, but if you need a vigilant “doorbell” that won’t miss a single rustle, the Mittel will do the job better.

Important: Dogs of this breed should never be rehomed as adults. They are one-person dogs. A Spitz attaches to one family once and for all, and they take even a short separation from their loved ones (for example, during holidays) extremely painfully, potentially refusing food and falling into depression.

Health: Typical Diseases and Prevention

Mittelspitzes, as an aboriginal breed, are distinguished by very good immunity and health. They are long-livers. Their genetics are much “cleaner” than those of many artificially bred decorative breeds. However, like any living being, they have their weak points.

To ensure your pet remains healthy, active, and cheerful, do not forget to vaccinate them on time with complex vaccines and visit the vet for routine check-ups at least once a year. Below is a list of problems a Mittel owner might encounter:

Patella Luxation: This is the most common orthopaedic problem in Spitzes of all sizes. Ensure the dog does not jump from high surfaces onto slippery floors.

Dental Problems: Due to the tight spacing of teeth in a small jaw, Spitzes are prone to tartar build-up and early tooth loss. Brushing teeth must become a routine.

Tracheal Collapse: A characteristic cough, sounding like quacking, can occur when the collar presses on the throat. It is recommended to use a harness instead of a collar for walks.

Alopecia X (Black Skin Disease): This is hair loss of unknown aetiology. It is often provoked by clipping “down to the skin”. Never shave a Spitz bald!

Particular attention should be paid to the Spitz’s diet. Representatives of this breed are prone to obesity because they love to eat and are masters at begging for tasty morsels. The amount of food they consume needs to be carefully controlled. Excess weight is a direct path to heart and joint problems. Occasionally, vitamin and mineral supplements designed for long-haired dogs (with biotin and omega-3) can be added to their food, but only after consulting a doctor.

Care and Maintenance: How to Preserve the Fluffy Beauty?

The Medium German Spitz is a universal soldier. It will feel equally good in urban conditions and in the rural realities of the countryside. If you plan to keep the pet in the garden of a private house for most of the time, ensure there is a warm enclosure with a kennel. But remember: the Spitz is a social animal; it cannot live witout interaction with people. Constant keeping on a chain or in isolation will destroy the dog’s psyche.

These dogs must not get too cold (although the thick undercoat keeps them warm) or stay under the scorching sun in summer (the risk of heatstroke due to thick fur is high). A Spitz living in a flat requires regular long walks – at least twice a day for 30-40 minutes. These dogs absolutely adore playing and running in the fresh air, catching a ball, or simply exploring new territories.

Grooming: Myths and Reality

Many are frightened by the voluminous coat of the Spitz; it seems that caring for it is a nightmare. In reality, it is simpler. The structure of the coat is such that it is not prone to forming mats (if not neglected). To ensure your pet always looks well-groomed, you need to follow simple rules:

Brushing: A few times a week (2-3 times), the Spitz needs to be brushed with a slicker brush and a metal comb. During the moulting period (spring/autumn) – daily. Important technique: you need to brush “from the root”, parting the hair to comb through the undercoat, not just stroking the top.

Washing: These dogs should be washed extremely rarely, only when heavily soiled (once every 1.5 – 2 months). They are clean, and their coat has self-cleaning properties. Frequent washing strips away the protective oily layer.

Cosmetics: When washing, be sure to use a special moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Dry hair becomes brittle. Do not add oils to the rinsing water “by eye”; it is better to use professional sprays.

Trimming: Spitzes only need a hygienic trim (paws, the area under the tail, ears). Model haircuts, especially the “Boo” cut, are strictly forbidden by veterinary dermatologists, as this disrupts thermoregulation and hair growth.

Do not forget to regularly clean your pet’s eyes (you can use a special lotion or a weak camomile decoction), trim their claws monthly (they often don’t wear down naturally due to the dog’s light weight), and occasionally brush their teeth with special dog toothpaste.

Training and Socialisation

Mittelspitzes are intellectuals. They are smart and clever dogs that are easily trained and memorise commands with lightning speed. However, they have one peculiarity – cunning. They quickly understand where they can “slack off”. Therefore, you will need patience and consistency.

You must never shout at a Spitz, let alone use physical force. These dogs have a sense of dignity and demand respect. Violence will make the dog timid or aggressive. The best method is positive reinforcement (treats, praise, play).

Bark Control: This is a key moment in upbringing. The Spitz needs to be raised strictly regarding its voice. From puppyhood, it must be taught not to bark at everything. The “Quiet” command should be one of the first learned. If you miss this moment, you will get a dog that “comments” on every sound in the stairwell.

Also, Spitzes get used to being held very quickly. It is tempting to carry a fluffy ball in your arms, but do not habituate him to this excessively. The dog must walk on its own paws, otherwise, he will become dependent and insecure. These dogs need to be educated from the first days they appear in the house.

They are very quick-witted and can thoroughly learn all basic commands (“Sit”, “Come”, “Bed”) at an early age. However, to keep the Spitz interested and not bored, invent more new tricks for him (dancing on hind legs, spinning, giving a high five), which he will gladly perform for a piece of cheese. Representatives of this breed are among the smartest dogs that can be winners in agility or obedience competitions, or simply bring you your slippers at home.

Nutrition: The Key to Longevity

To ensure your pet is active, healthy, and beautiful, you need to take care of its diet. Spitzes are dogs with wonderful coats, the condition of which depends directly on the animal’s food products. A dull coat is the first sign of an improper diet.

Natural Feeding: The base should consist of lean meat (beef, turkey), fermented milk products, a little grain (rice, buckwheat), and vegetables. Under no circumstances should dogs be given fatty meat (pork), river fish (risk of worms), tubular bones (deadly dangerous!), potatoes, smoked foods, legumes, exotic fruits, citrus, sweets, chocolate, spices, or yeast pastries.

Dry Food: If you are not sure you can always prepare a balanced meal for your pet on time, it is better to feed him ready-made special food. This saves time and guarantees a balance of vitamins. Mixing these two types of feeding (dry and natural) in one bowl is not allowed – this leads to digestive disorders. Ready-made food should be of Super Premium or Holistic class. Avoid foods with high grain content. Do not buy food sold by weight without packaging – it is often oxidised, of low quality, and can cause poisoning. Do not overfeed the Spitz; follow the norms on the package.

Pros and Cons of the Breed

Advantages:

Cheerful, optimistic character that lifts your mood.

Convenient size for travel and city living.

High intelligence and learning ability.

Lack of hunting instinct (won’t run away after a cat).

Robust health and longevity.

Striking appearance.

Disadvantages:

Tendency to bark loudly (requires correction).

Seasonal moulting (fur will be everywhere if not brushed).

Cheekiness and pugnacity towards large dogs (Napoleon complex).

Need for constant companionship; they do not tolerate loneliness well.

Interesting Facts About German Spitzes

1. A Royal Choice. Although Mittels were dogs of the common people, their smaller brothers conquered the hearts of kings. Queen Victoria was a fan of Spitzes, which made the breed incredibly popular in Britain.
2. The Spitz Smile. Thanks to the special structure of the jaw and the raised corners of the lips, it seems that the Spitz is constantly smiling. This is not just anatomy; it is a reflection of their essence.
3. Multicoloured Children. Puppies of different colours can be born in one Mittelspitz litter if the parents have the appropriate genetics.
4. Long-livers. Dogs that live up to 18 and even 20 years with good care are frequently found among Mittels.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does the Mittelspitz moult heavily?
Yes, active moulting occurs twice a year (spring and autumn) when the undercoat is completely renewed. During this period, the dog needs to be brushed daily. The rest of the time, shedding is moderate.

Is this breed suitable for allergy sufferers?
No, the Spitz is not a hypoallergenic breed. The thick undercoat and dander can cause a reaction. However, the lack of drooling (the dog is not “slobbery”) makes it less allergenic than, for example, Bulldogs.

Can I shave a Spitz for the summer?
Absolutely not! The coat works like a thermos – it protects against both cold and heat. If you shave a Spitz, it can get heatstroke and skin burns, and the new coat may never grow back as beautiful as before.

Video About the Breed

The Medium German Spitz (Mittelspitz) is a true bundle of energy wrapped in an elegant fluffy coat.
