Translated from Japanese, this name means the number “eight”, which is considered lucky in the East and symbolises good fortune. Without a doubt, this incredibly loyal dog brought genuine spiritual luck and happiness to his master – Professor Hidesaburō Ueno. It is believed that the ancestors of these dogs, known as “Matagi-inu” (hunter’s dog), appeared on the Japanese islands more than four thousand years ago. Archaeological excavations confirm the existence of Spitz-type dogs during that period. In Japan, they say the Akita is the soul of a samurai encased in a dog’s body.

Originally, Matagi-inu were used to hunt large game: wild boar, deer, and even the Ussuri bear. A pair of such dogs could hold a bear at bay until the hunter arrived. This required remarkable courage, agility, and the ability to make independent decisions – traits that have been preserved in the breed to this day.

The era of dog fighting and decline

During the Edo period and later, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, dog fighting gained popularity. To give the dogs more strength and mass, Akitas began to be crossed with Tosa Inus and European Mastiffs. This led to the classic Spitz appearance beginning to fade: drop ears, skin folds, and excessive massiveness appeared. The breed was on the verge of losing its identity.

Fortunately, in 1931, the Japanese government recognised the Akita Inu as a “Natural Monument”. This provided the impetus to begin work on restoring the original appearance. But then the Second World War began. During this tragic time, dogs were exterminated en masse: their fur was used to line winter clothing for the army. Exceptions were made only for German Shepherds serving in the military. To save their beloved Akitas, some owners secretly crossed them with Shepherds or hid them in remote mountain villages with hunters.

The breed split: Japanese and American lines

After the war, the restoration process began. During this time, several breeding lines formed. Soldiers of the US occupation forces often took puppies home, but they preferred large, bear-like dogs with traces of Mastiff and Shepherd blood (the Dewa line). Thus was born the breed we know today as the American Akita. Japanese cynologists, however, focused on restoring the elegant, Spitz-like type (the Ichinoseki line), cleansing the breed of impurities. Official recognition of the renewed standard by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale took place in 1964.

What the Akita Inu looks like: standard and physical features

The modern Akita Inu is a large, harmoniously built dog that exudes dignity and quiet strength. Unlike their American relatives, the Japanese type is lighter and more refined.

Head: Massive but proportional to the body. Skull is wide, flat between the ears. Viewed from above, the head resembles a blunt triangle. The transition from forehead to muzzle (stop) is well defined.

Muzzle: Powerful, not pointed, of medium length. Nasal bridge is straight. Lips have black pigmentation and fit tightly. The tongue is usually pink.

Eyes: A characteristic “oriental” feature. They are small, triangular in shape, with the outer corner raised upwards. Colour – dark brown; the darker, the better. The gaze is attentive and intelligent.

Ears: Relatively small, thick, triangular with slightly rounded tips. Important detail: they lean forward along the line of the neck, giving the dog a focused expression.

Body: Back is straight and strong. Loin is broad and muscular. Chest is deep, with well-sprung ribs.

Tail: Set high, thick, energetically curled over the back. Can form a single or double ring. The tip of the tail almost always touches the back or thigh.

Coat and Colour: the magic of “Urajiro”

The coat consists of three layers: longer and coarser guard hairs, a harsh topcoat, and a dense, soft undercoat that protects against any frost. The standard permits only a few colours:

Red: The most common. Rich red colour on the upper part of the body.

Brindle: Black stripes on a red, silver, or white background.

White: Pure white without any markings. In white dogs, the nose may be liver-coloured, although black is preferable.

Sesame: Red coat with black tips (rarely seen).

Important: For all colours except solid white, the presence of “Urajiro” is mandatory. This is whitish hair on the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, underside of the jaw, neck, chest, body and tail, as well as on the inner surface of the limbs. It is a kind of calling card for the true Japanese Akita.

Character: the philosophy of the samurai

The Akita Inu is not the sort of dog that will jump for joy around every passerby. This is a serious, brave, and self-confident animal. They are reserved in showing emotion, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to love. Their love is deep, quiet, and reserved exclusively for “their” people.

These dogs never strive to please just for a treat. They cannot be “bought”, they can only be earned. They are ready to obey a leader, but only if that leader is fair and consistent. The Akita has high intelligence and a tendency to make independent decisions. If the dog considers the master’s command senseless, he may look at you with philosophical calm and… do nothing.

In terms of temperament, Akitas are often compared to cats. They are clean, groom themsleves, value personal space, and can watch the world go by for hours. But in the face of danger, they instantly transform into a formidable protector.

Pros and cons of the breed

Pros (+)

Cons (-)

Boundless devotion and loyalty to family

Tendency towards dominance and stubbornness

Excellent guard qualities, barks only when necessary

Aggression towards other dogs (especially same sex)

Cleanliness, lack of specific “doggy” smell

Heavy seasonal moulting (fur everywhere)

High intelligence and learning capacity

Difficult to train with standard methods

Does not require marathon runs

Not suitable for novices without canine experience

Quiet temperament in the apartment

Strong hunting instinct (small animals are at risk)

Upbringing, training and socialisation

If you have decided to buy an Akita Inu, you must be completely confident in your abilities. This breed does not tolerate weakness. An Akita owner must be an “iron hand in a velvet glove”. Cruelty is unacceptable with this breed – you will lose the dog’s trust forever and gain a bitter enemy. Only respect, patience, and consistency will work.

Key training aspects

Early socialisation: This is critically important. From 2-3 months, the puppy must see other people, dogs, hear city sounds, and travel on transport. Akitas are naturally suspicious and can be aggressive towards strange dogs. If you miss the socialisation window, walks will turn into a living hell of constantly holding back the lead. If you are looking for a dog with a softer character, you might want to consider the Eurasier, which is less dominant.

Play-based format: The best way to establish contact is through shared games. But the Akita gets bored quickly. Monotonous repetition of the “sit” command 20 times in a row is not for them. They will do it twice, and on the third time, they will go about their own business.

Motivation: Find what your dog is willing to work for. It might be not just food, but a toy or simply emotional praise from the master.

Hierarchy: An Akita will test your “strength” throughout its life, especially during adolescence. It is important to calmly but firmly set boundaries.

Health: typical diseases and prevention

Akitas are sturdy dogs, shaped by a harsh climate. However, like any breed, they have their weak points. Before buying, be sure to demand tests for genetic diseases of the parents from the breeder.

Main health problems:

Hip dysplasia: A common disease in large dogs. It is important not to physically overload the puppy until it is a year old.

Ophthalmic problems: Entropion (eyelid turning inward), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), glaucoma.

Autoimmune diseases: Sebaceous adenitis (causes skin and coat problems) and pemphigus foliaceus.

Gastric torsion (Bloat): A deadly condition. To avoid this, feed the dog strictly after walks, not before. After eating – a minimum of one hour of rest.

Do not forget about regular vaccination and parasite treatment (ticks, fleas, worms). This is the baseline for any dog’s health.

Care and hygiene

The Akita Inu is a dog that will suit even “lazy” owners in terms of grooming, but only for 10 months of the year. For the remaining 2 months, you will have to live with a vacuum cleaner in your hand. We are talking about moulting.

They moult twice a year, very heavily, shedding their entire undercoat. During this period (“blowing coat”), the dog needs to be brushed daily with a slicker brush or special rake. If this is not done, the dead hair mats together and the skin underneath steams, which causes dermatitis (eczema). In normal times, it is enough to brush the dog 1-2 times a week.

Bathing: Akita wool has the ability to self-clean. Frequent washing washes away the protective fat layer. You should only bathe them when necessary or 2-3 times a year.

It is also important to regularly trim claws (if they do not wear down on the asphalt) and clean ears. It is recommended to clean teeth with special paste or give chewing treats.

Nutrition: dietary features

Their Japanese origin leaves a mark on the Akita’s metabolism. Historically, they fed on rice, fish, and seafood. Therefore, many Akitas have an allergy to chicken, fatty beef, and maize, as well as soya (common components in cheap foods).

Feeding recommendations:

Dry food: Choose “Holistic” or “Super-premium” class. She called them “angels in fur”.

Akitas almost never bark without reason. If an Akita gives voice, it means something really important has happened that is worth paying attention to.

Representatives of the breed are considered some of the cleanest dogs. They are often called “odourless dogs”.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the Akita Inu suitable for an apartment?
Yes, despite their size, they are not overly active at home and do not take up much space. Leaving a dog alone with a small child without supervision is forbidden; this rule applies to any large breed.

How does the Akita differ from the Hokkaido (Ainu)?
The Hokkaido is slightly smaller in size and has an even stronger hunting instinct; they are “wilder” in behaviour, whereas modern Akitas are more companion-oriented.

How does the Akita differ from the Shiba Inu?
Although at first glance these dogs seem similar, they should not be confused: The Akita is a powerful 50kg giant, bred for bear hunting and guarding, acting like a staid and silent samurai, whereas the Shiba Inu is the smallest Japanese dog (weighing up to 13 kg), resembling a fox and distinguished by an energetic, cunning, and almost “cat-like” temperament without pronounced guarding instincts.

How does the Japanese Akita differ from the American Akita?
The main difference lies in constitution and colours, arising from the historical split of the breed after the Second World War. The Japanese Akita is more refined, of the “fox” type, has only strictly defined colours with a mandatory white mask, whereas the American Akita is a much more massive, “bear-type” dog with heavy bone structure, in which absolutely any colours are permitted, including a black mask on the muzzle, which is strictly forbidden for its Japanese cousin.

Video about the breed

It is unlikely you will find anyone today who is not familiar with the story of the most faithful and devoted dog of the Akita Inu breed, also known as…

[52
7187,320

post-119091","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-dogs-breeds","tag-white-dogs","tag-320
["GET
