It is the result of purposeful breeding efforts involving the crossing of wild Libyan steppe cats (Felis lybica) with various domestic cats; you can read more about this on Tvaryny. This breed combines the exotic appearance of its wild ancestor with the more amenable nature of a household pet. The Canaan cat is low-maintenance, known for its robust health and adaptability. Whilst it values independence and requires opportunities for roaming and activity, the Kanaani is also very people-oriented and gets along well with all family members, without singling out any one person. Attention and interaction are key to its happy life.

Canaan Cat: A Brief Breed Overview

Characteristic

Description

Origin

Israel

Year of Creation/Recognition

Breeding began in the 1990s; recognised by the WCF (World Cat Federation) as an experimental breed.

Lifespan

13-16 years (sometimes longer with proper care)

Size

Medium to large

Weight

Males: 4-7 kg, Females: 3-5 kg

Coat Type

Short, dense, with a light undercoat

Colour

Only spotted tabby or classic (marbled) tabby on a beige, brown, or cinnamon background. In the late 1990s, she observed a large population of feral cats living freely in the outskirts of the city and throughout the country. These cats, descendants of the African wildcat (Felis lybica), which is considered the ancestor of all domestic cats, had adapted remarkably well to the harsh local climate and environment.

Inspired by their resilience and natural beauty, Doris resolved to create a new breed. Her vision was to retain the external features of the wild ancestors whilst cultivating a more balanced and sociable temperament suitable for life as a domestic companion. The goal was to develop a cat that resembled its wild forebears but was thoroughly socialised.

To bring this idea to fruition, Doris Pollatschek initiated a selective breeding programme. She captured wild Libyan cats and crossed them with carefully chosen representatives of various domestic cat breeds. The world of cat breeding is wonderfully diverse, having produced fascinating breeds from the elegant Tonkinese cat, known for its charming personality and striking aqua eyes, to the historic Thai cat, which carries an ancient lineage and distinctive pointed pattern. For the Canaan cat, the following were involved in the breeding programme:

Libyan Steppe Cat (Felis lybica): To impart the wild appearance, characteristic tabby markings, and stamina.

Abyssinian Cat: For the ticked coat (agouti effect) and elegant physique.

Bengal Cat: To enhance the spotted pattern and exotic look.

Oriental Shorthair Cat: For refined body lines, large ears, and almond-shaped eyes.

Domestic Shorthair Cats: To establish desired character traits and genetic diversity.

The first kittens conforming to the envisioned standard appeared in the early 2000s. The name “Canaan Cat” derives from the ancient name of the region – Canaan – underscoring its Israeli roots. The breed has received preliminary recognition from some feline organisations; notably, the World Cat Federation (WCF) has classified it as an experimental breed, meaning it is still undergoing development and observation.

To this day, the Canaan cat remains a very rare breed, with catteries existing predominantly in Israel and a few European countries (such as Germany). Finding a kitten of this breed outside its homeland can be quite challenging.

Breed Standard and Appearance of the Canaan Cat

The Canaan cat is an elegant yet strong animal of medium to large size, combining features of its wild and domestic ancestors. It possesses well-developed musculature and a sturdy bone structure, indicative of its stamina.

Body: Long, slender, yet muscular. It should not be overly massive or too light. The chest is well-developed.

Head: A broad triangle with soft contours. The chin is strong.

Ears: Large, broad at the base, set high and erect. The tips are slightly rounded. Ear tufts (lynx tips) are desirable, like those of a lynx, adding to its wild charm. The distance between the ears is quite wide.

Eyes: Large, almond-shaped, and expressive. Set slightly obliquely. It has a light undercoat, which may be more pronounced in colder seasons. The texture of the coat should not be overly soft.

Colour and Pattern: Only two tabby patterns are recognised: spotted and classic (or marbled) tabby. Spots should be clear and contrast well with the background colour. The marbled pattern should be symmetrical, with characteristic ‘butterflies’ on the shoulders and stripes along the body. Ticking is essential – a zonal colouration of each hair shaft, creating a characteristic ‘shimmer’ on the background. The background coat colour ranges from sandy-beige to rich brown and cinnamon. The pattern (spots or marbling) is always darker than the background – from brown to black.

Overall, the Canaan cat gives the impression of a graceful, agile, and alert animal that has retained the natural beauty of its wild ancestors.

Character and Temperament of the Canaan Cat

The Canaan cat’s character is an intriguing blend of wild predator traits and those of an affectionate domestic companion. Through dedicated selective breeding, the excessive caution and potential aggression of its wild ancestors have been softened, whilst preserving their independence, intelligence, and activeness.

Key Character Traits of the Kanaani:

Independence: Canaan cats value their autonomy. They are not typical ‘lap cats’ that constantly demand attention. They can find their own entertainment and are comfortable being alone for certain periods.

Activity and Playfulness: These are highly energetic cats requiring plenty of movement and stimulation. They adore games, especially those that mimic hunting (with teaser wands, balls, laser pointers). They need space to run and climb, so equipping the home with cat trees and shelves is advisable.

Inquisitiveness: Kanaanis are extremely curious about anything new. They will explore every nook and cranny of your home, watch what you are doing, and try to be involved in all activities.

Affection and Attachment: Despite their independence, Canaan cats become very attached to their owners and need human interaction. They will greet you at the door, rub against your legs, and purr when petted. Unlike some breeds, they are not inclined to choose a single ‘favourite’ person but are equally well-disposed towards all family members.

Communicativeness: These cats are quite ‘talkative’. They use a wide range of sounds – from gentle purrs to loud meows – to express their needs and emotions. This is not a breed that will remain silent if it needs something.

Territoriality: As descendants of wild cats, Kanaanis can exhibit territorial behaviour. They diligently watch over their territory and can be wary of strangers, though they do not typically show aggression without cause.

Attitude towards Children and Other Animals: Canaan cats generally get on well with children, especially if the children are taught to respect the animal and its personal space. They can also live harmoniously with other cats and dogs, particularly if socialised together from a young age. However, their strong hunting instinct may pose a threat to small pets (rodents, birds).

It is vital to provide a Canaan cat with sufficient attention and opportunities for physical and mental activity to prevent boredom and potential behavioural issues. This breed is an ideal choice for active individuals and families who are prepared to dedicate time to their energetic and intelligent companion.

Caring for a Canaan Cat

Caring for a Canaan cat is not overly complicated, as the breed has inherited hardiness and adaptability from its wild ancestors. However, certain aspects require regular attention.

Grooming (Coat Care):

The short, dense coat of the Kanaani is not prone to matting and requires minimal grooming.

It is recommended to brush the cat once a week with a rubber brush or grooming mitt to remove dead hairs and stimulate skin circulation.

During seasonal moulting (spring and autumn), when the cat sheds its light undercoat, brushing should be more frequent – two to three times a week – to reduce the amount of hair in the home.

Bathe a Canaan cat only when absolutely necessary, for example, if it becomes heavily soiled. Frequent washing can disrupt the natural protective oils of the skin. Use only specialised cat shampoos.

Care of Claws, Ears, and Eyes:

Claws: Regularly (approximately every 2-4 weeks) trim the tips of the claws with special clippers to prevent ingrowth and damage to furniture. Be sure to provide several scratching posts of different types (vertical, horizontal, cardboard) so the cat can satisfy its natural need to scratch.

Ears: Inspect the ears once a week for dirt, wax, or signs of infection (redness, unpleasant odour). The outer ear can be cleaned with a cotton pad moistened with a special ear cleaning solution for cats. Never use cotton buds to clean the ear canal.

Eyes: The eyes of a Kanaani usually do not require special care. If small discharges appear in the corners of the eyes, they can be gently removed with a soft cloth or cotton pad moistened with clean warm water or a special eye lotion. If discharges are heavy, purulent, or the eyes are red, consult a veterinarian.

Activity and Environment:

Canaan cats are very active animals. They need space for games, running, and climbing.

Provide your cat with a variety of toys: balls, mice, interactive toys, teaser wands with feathers. Play with your cat regularly to satisfy its need for activity and strengthen your bond.

Install a tall cat tree at home or set up shelves for climbing. Kanaanis love to observe their surroundings from a height.

Whilst Kanaanis can adapt to living in a flat, they greatly appreciate the opportunity for fresh air. The ideal option would be safe outdoor access in an enclosure (catio) or walks on a harness and lead (to which the cat should be accustomed from a young age). Free-roaming outdoors is not recommended due to the risks of injury, infection, and loss of the animal.

Following these straightforward guidelines will help keep your Canaan cat healthy, well-groomed, and happy.

Feeding Your Canaan Cat: Key Recommendations

Canaan cats are generally not fussy eaters and have a good appetite, another legacy from their hardy ancestors. However, to maintain health, energy, and a fine appearance, it is important to provide them with a balanced and high-quality diet.

Types of Feeding:

Commercial Foods (Dry and Wet): This is the most convenient option, ensuring a balanced diet. Choose premium or super-premium grade foods formulated for active cats. These contain a high percentage of quality animal protein (meat, poultry, or fish listed as primary ingredients), essential fats, vitamins, and minerals.

Mixed Feeding: Combining dry and wet food is an optimal approach. Dry food helps to clean teeth by reducing plaque, whilst wet food provides additional hydration and is often more palatable. It is important not to mix them in the same bowl but to offer them at different times.

Natural Feeding (Raw or Home-Cooked): This option requires more time and knowledge. The diet should consist mainly of raw or lightly cooked meat (beef, chicken, turkey), offal, a small amount of vegetables, and cultured dairy products. It is strictly inadvisable to feed your cat human food from the table (salted, fried, smoked, sweet items). When feeding a natural diet, it is essential to add vitamin and mineral supplements selected by a veterinarian.

Age / Condition

Type of Food

Feeding Frequency

Approximate Daily Amount (Dry Food)

Kitten (up to 6 months)

Kitten food (dry/wet)

3-4 times

As per packaging instructions

Junior (6-12 months)

Kitten food / transition to adult

2-3 times

As per instructions

Adult Cat (1-7 years)

Food for active adult cats

2 times

50-80g (depending on weight and activity)

Senior Cat (over 7-8 years)

Food for senior cats

2 times

As per instructions (often less)

Pregnant/Lactating Queen

Kitten food or food for pregnant/lactating queens

Free access / 3-4 times

Increased amount

Health and Lifespan of the Canaan Cat

The Canaan cat is considered a relatively healthy breed with a strong immune system, partly due to its wildcat ancestry and the use of diverse genetic material in its development (hybrid vigour). Currently, owing to the breed’s youth, no specific hereditary diseases uniquely characteristic of Kanaanis have been documented. However, this does not mean they are entirely immune to common feline ailments.

Common Health Issues to Be Aware Of:

Oral Cavity Diseases: Like many other cats, Kanaanis can suffer from gingivitis, periodontitis, and tartar build-up. Regular oral examinations, brushing teeth with a special paste and brush, and using dry food can help prevent these problems.

Obesity: With insufficient activity and overfeeding, these cats can gain excess weight, increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems. It is important to control their diet and ensure an adequate level of physical exercise.

Injuries: Due to their activity and inquisitiveness, especially with outdoor access (even on a lead), Kanaanis have an increased risk of injuries (falls, fights with other animals, road traffic accidents). Therefore, ensuring a safe environment is crucial.

Infectious Diseases: Despite a robust immune system, Kanaanis can contract standard feline infections (calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, feline leukaemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)). Timely vaccinations are critically important for preventing these diseases.

Parasites: Regular treatment for fleas, ticks, and worms is necessary, especially if the cat has outdoor access.

Prevention:

Regular Veterinary Check-ups: Visit the vet at least once a year for a preventative check-up, vaccinations, and to discuss any changes in the cat’s behaviour or health.

Vaccination and Deworming: Adhere to the schedule of vaccinations and parasite treatments recommended by your veterinarian.

Balanced Nutrition and Weight Control.

Sufficient Physical Activity and Mental Stimulation.

Safe Environment: Limit or control outdoor access, and remove potentially dangerous objects and plants from the home.

Lifespan: With proper care, quality nutrition, and timely veterinary attention, Canaan cats typically live for 13–16 years, and sometimes even longer. Their natural hardiness contributes to their longevity.

Training and Upbringing of the Canaan Cat

Canaan cats are intelligent and quick-witted animals, making them potentially amenable to training. However, their independent nature, inherited from wild ancestors, requires a special approach to upbringing and training. Coercion and punishment are ineffective and can lead to the opposite effect – loss of trust and stubbornness.

Key Principles for Raising a Kanaani:

Positive Reinforcement: The most effective method is to reward desired behaviour with treats, praise, affection, or play. When the cat does what you want (e.g., uses the scratching post instead of the sofa), reward it immediately.

Patience and Consistency: Training takes time. Be patient and consistent in your demands and reactions. All family members should adhere to the same rules.

Short Training Sessions: Cats quickly lose concentration. Conduct training sessions in short bursts of 5–10 minutes, ending them on a positive note whilst the cat is still engaged.

Ignoring Undesirable Behaviour: If the behaviour is not dangerous, it is sometimes better to ignore it rather than punish. For example, if the cat meows for attention, do not react until it is quiet.

Redirecting Attention: If the cat is doing something undesirable (e.g., scratching furniture), do not shout, but calmly redirect its attention to an approved object (scratching post) and praise it when it starts using it.

What You Can Teach a Canaan Cat:

Litter Tray Training: Usually straightforward, as cats are naturally clean.

Scratching Post Training: It is important from the earliest days to show the kitten where it is acceptable to sharpen its claws.

Harness and Lead Training: If you plan to take your cat for walks, start accustoming the kitten to a harness gradually, using positive reinforcement.

Simple Commands: Some Kanaanis can learn to respond to their name and perform simple commands (‘come’, ‘sit’) with clicker training and treats.

Fetching: Thanks to their playfulness, some cats can be taught to retrieve small toys.

Socialisation:

Early socialisation is vital for a Canaan cat. Introduce the kitten to various people, sounds, situations, and, if possible, other animals (under supervision). This will help it grow into a confident and well-balanced cat, less prone to fear and aggression in new circumstances.

Pros and Cons of the Canaan Cat Breed

Like any breed, the Canaan cat has its advantages and disadvantages, which prospective owners should consider before welcoming such a pet into their home.

Pros (+)

Cons (–)

Exotic Appearance: Attractive ‘wild’ look with a spotted or marbled coat and expressive eyes.

Rarity and High Price: The breed is difficult to find outside Israel and Europe; kittens are expensive.

Robust Health: Generally a hardy breed with a good immune system and few hereditary diseases.

High Activity Needs: Requires plenty of space, play, and attention; can become bored in a small flat.

Intelligence and Quick-Wittedness: Easy to train, inquisitive.

Independence and Stubbornness: Can be challenging to train if coercive methods are used.

Low Grooming Needs: Short coat requires minimal grooming.

‘Talkativeness’: Quite vocal and meows frequently, which may irritate some people.

Adaptability: Adjusts to various living conditions (if activity needs are met).

Territoriality: May be wary of strangers or other animals.

Family-Friendly: Affectionate, generally gets along well with children.

Strong Hunting Instinct: May pose a threat to small animals.

Playfulness: Remains active for many years.

Benefits from Outdoor Access (Safely): Appreciates the opportunity for fresh air (enclosure, lead).

Interesting Facts About the Canaan Cat

Biblical Name: The breed’s name, ‘Canaan’, comes from the ancient land of Canaan, the territory of modern-day Israel and neighbouring countries, mentioned in the Bible. This highlights the breed’s geographical origin.

Direct Descendant of the Wildcat: The Canaan cat is one of the few breeds directly involving wild cats (Felis lybica) in its creation, giving it a unique status and appearance.

Created by a Sculptor: The breed’s founder, Doris Pollatschek, was a sculptor by profession. Perhaps her artistic vision contributed to shaping the breed’s aesthetic standards.

Adaptation to Heat: Thanks to its origins, Canaan cats tolerate hot climates well, although their coat has a light undercoat.

Ear Tufts: Although not mandatory, small tufts at the tips of the ears (lynx tips) are a highly desirable feature of the standard, making them resemble a lynx or caracal.

Only Green Eyes: The breed standard permits only green eye colour, though shades can vary from light green to deep emerald.

Experimental Status: In most major feline organisations, the Canaan cat still holds experimental or preliminarily recognised status, as work on its stabilisation continues.

Similarity to Other Breeds: In appearance, the Canaan cat is sometimes confused with other spotted breeds, such as the Bengal cat or Ocicat, although it has its own unique features and origin. It also bears some resemblance to its wild ancestor and naturally occurring breeds like the Anatolian cat, which also hails from the Middle East.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Canaan Cat

Is the Canaan cat suitable for living in a flat?

Yes, a Canaan cat can live in a flat, provided it is given enough space for movement, opportunities for climbing (tall cat trees, shelves), and regular active play sessions with its owner. Otherwise, out of boredom, it might start to cause mischief. Ideally, there should be an option for safe outdoor access (a balcony enclosure or walks on a harness).

Does the Canaan cat shed a lot?

Shedding is moderate. The coat is short, but there is a light undercoat, so during seasonal moults (spring/autumn), the amount of hair may increase. Regular brushing (1-2 times a week) helps to control this.

Are Canaan cats aggressive?

No, with proper socialisation, Canaan cats are not aggressive. They can be wary of strangers due to their territorial nature, but they are affectionate and friendly towards family members. Aggression might only manifest in cases of fear, pain, or rough handling.

How much does a Canaan kitten cost?

This is a very rare breed, so the price of kittens can be high and vary significantly. It depends on the pedigree, conformity to the standard, the breeder’s reputation, and the country. Indicatively, prices can start from several hundred and reach over a thousand pounds/euros, plus transportation costs if buying from abroad.

Can a Canaan cat be left alone for long periods?

Although quite independent, Kanaanis require human interaction. They can be left alone during a working day, provided they have enough toys and space for activity. However, leaving them alone for several days without supervision is not recommended.

Do Canaan cats cause allergies?

The Canaan cat is not a hypoallergenic breed. Like most cats, it produces the allergen Fel d 1 (in saliva and skin secretions), which can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. The level of allergenicity is individual to each animal.

Conclusion

The Canaan cat is a unique and rare breed that embodies the beauty of the wild and the complaisance of a domestic pet. Its exotic appearance, robust health, intelligence, and active yet affectionate character make it an attractive choice for experienced cat owners who are prepared to dedicate attention to its needs for activity and companionship. Whilst finding a Kanaani can be challenging, those fortunate enough to become owners of this Israeli marvel will gain a loyal, intelligent, and energetic companion for many years to come.

The Canaan cat, also known as the Kanaani, is a relatively new and rare breed.
