Detailed History of the Exotic Shorthair Breed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of the Exotic Shorthair cat is closely linked with two other well-known breeds: the Persian<\/a> and the American Shorthair. The breed emerged relatively recently, in the 1950s-1960s in the USA, and its appearance was more of an accident than a planned outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an effort to improve their breed \u2013 specifically, to obtain a silver coat colour and a more massive build \u2013 American Shorthair breeders began crossing them with silver-coloured Persian cats. The result was unexpected: the kittens inherited not only the desired colour and strong bone structure but also the flat face characteristic of Persians and a dense, albeit short, coat. These kittens had an incredibly cute “teddy bear” look and the calm, gentle nature of Persians, but with short hair, which significantly eased grooming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, such hybrids did not elicit enthusiasm from proponents of purebred American Shorthairs. However, Jane Martinke, a renowned breeder and CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) judge, saw the potential in these unusual cats. It was she who proposed they be recognised as a separate breed under the name “Sterling,” highlighting their silver ancestry. Later, when it became clear that the breed could have any colour, not just silver, the name was changed to “Exotic Shorthair,” which better reflected their unique appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1966, the CFA officially recognised the Exotic Shorthair breed. For further development and to solidify desired traits, the standard allowed Exotics to be crossed with Persians and American Shorthairs. Later, to preserve the breed’s unique characteristics, only matings between Exotics and Exotics, and Exotics and Persians, were permitted. This has led to the modern Exotic Shorthair being virtually identical to the Persian cat in standard, except for coat length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to their charming appearance, calm nature, and ease of care (compared to Persians), Exotics quickly gained worldwide popularity, becoming one of the most beloved domestic cat breeds, especially among those who love the Persian type but are not prepared to spend a lot of time on grooming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
