The American Eskimo Dog<\/strong> combines exquisite beauty, a sharp mind, and an incredibly gentle, cheerful character. They absolutely adore winter fun and playing in snowdrifts, which partly explains their name, although historically they have no direct connection to Inuit peoples or their sled dogs. Active, lively, and restless, American Eskimo Dogs love being the centre of attention in noisy groups of people, where they instantly become everyone’s favourites. History of the Breed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of the American Eskimo Dog is a vivid example of how political events can influence the fate of an entire breed. Despite their name, these dogs have nothing to do with the Arctic. Their direct ancestors are German Spitz<\/strong> dogs, which were brought to the USA by German immigrants. These snow-white dogs quickly gained popularity due to their beauty and intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key turning point in the breed’s history occurred at the beginning of the 20th century. After the USA entered World War I, anti-German sentiment in the country reached its peak. Anything German became unpopular, and this even affected dog breed names. To distance themselves from German roots, breeders renamed the German Spitz the “American Eskimo Dog” in 1917. The name was chosen in honour of the “American Eskimo” kennel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True fame came to the breed through circus performances. In the 1920s, the Cooper Brothers’ Circus made the American Eskimo Dog the star of its programme. A dog named Pierre amazed audiences with his ability to walk on a tightrope. This trick made the breed incredibly popular across the country. People were delighted by the clever and charming white dogs, which led to a rapid increase in demand for puppies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, the American Eskimo Dog developed in the USA in isolation from its European relatives, such as the German Spitz (Wolfspitz\/Keeshond)<\/a>, the Samoyed<\/a>, and the Japanese Spitz<\/a>. This led to the formation of unique traits that today distinguish American Eskimo Dogs from other Spitz-type breeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
