The History of the English Toy Terrier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of the English Toy Terrier is closely intertwined with the Industrial Revolution in 19th-century England. Their ancestors were Old English Black and Tan Terriers, prized for their exceptional rat-catching abilities. These dogs were invaluable assistants in controlling vermin in factories, mines, and homes. They were also the ancestors of another, larger breed\u2014the Manchester Terrier<\/a>\u2014which became famous for its ratting prowess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dog would be released into a “rat pit” filled with rats, and the winner was the one who killed the most rodents in the shortest amount of time. In 1920, the decision was made to officially separate the dogs by weight, and in 1962, the miniature Black and Tan Terriers were given their modern name\u2014the English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan)<\/strong>.
