That is why they are often called “Viking dogs.” There is a theory that Vallhunds accompanied Scandinavian seafarers on their voyages to the British coast. This explains the striking resemblance to famous British herders.

Many cynologists argue: did Vallhunds give rise to the Welsh Corgi Pembroke, or conversely, did Vikings bring Corgis to Sweden, where they mixed with local Spitzes? Genetic studies show that despite the resemblance to Corgis, Vallhunds have more in common with northern breeds, such as the Icelandic Sheepdog. This connection confirms their belonging to the Spitz group, rather than to sheepdogs in the classic sense.

Nowadays, they are very popular, especially among residents of Sweden and the UK. However, quite recently, in the 1940s, the breed was on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, Count Björn von Rosen turned out to be a dog lover, particularly of Vallhunds, as he had a faithful dog of this breed in his childhood. Together with headmaster Karl-Gustav Zettersten, the Count began a large-scale campaign to find surviving representatives of the breed in the Västergötland region.

The Count managed to save these beautiful dogs from disappearing. They found several typical individuals, among whom a male named Mopsen and a female named Vivi stood out. They became the ancestors of most modern Vallhunds. In 1943, the breed was officially recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club. The standard was registered at the same time.

In 1953, the name “Swedish Vallhund” was officially changed to “Västgötaspets.” This highlights their origin from the province of Västergötland. Since their existence, these dogs have been famous for their working qualities; they herded cows by nipping at their hocks (which is why they are categorized as “heelers”), protected them from wild animals, and hunted rats. Today they are even used in rescue operations after natural disasters. Vallhunds have a sharp nose, track excellently, and their small size allows them to get into hard-to-reach places.

What Does the Swedish Vallhund Look Like: Appearance Description

The Swedish Vallhund is a small-sized dog breed with a robust, strong physique and developed musculature. At first glance, it resembles a wolf that has been magically shrunk to the size of a lap dog but left with all the power of a large beast. The ratio of height at the withers to body length is approximately 2:3.

Head and Muzzle

The head of these dogs is elongated, clearly defined, wedge-shaped, with a flat forehead. The transition from forehead to muzzle (stop) is well pronounced but not too sharp. The muzzle is slightly shorter than the cranial part. Lips fit tightly to the teeth and should not be sagging. Jaws are strong, with a perfect scissor bite. Eyes are oval, medium-sized, dark brown, with an attentive and intelligent expression.

Ears are pricked, pointed at the tips, medium-sized, and very mobile. The ear conch is directed forward, giving the dog a constantly alert look. The hair on the ears is short and smooth.

Body and Limbs

The neck is long, powerful, with good carriage. The back is strong, straight, muscular, of medium length. The loin is short and strong. The chest is well developed, ellipsoid in shape, deep and fairly broad, reaching down to the elbows. This provides a large lung volume necessary for stamina. Legs are short, with very strong bone, muscular, straight and parallel to each other. Paws are oval, tight-knit, with thick pads.

Tail: A Genetic Lottery

The tail of the Vallhund is a unique feature. It can be long or naturally short (bobtail). The breed standard allows both variants. Bobtails are a natural mutation. Puppies with long tails, no tails at all, or tails of various lengths can be born in the same litter. Tail docking is banned in many European countries, so you can now see the full variety of natural Vallhund tails at dog shows.

Coat and Color

The coat is harsh, of medium length with a dense, soft, and thick undercoat that provides excellent protection against bad weather. The hair is shorter on the head and the front of the legs, and longer on the neck, chest, and back of the thighs, forming “pants.”

The color can be gray, gray-yellow, reddish-yellow, or brownish. A characteristic feature is the so-called “harness markings” – areas of lighter fur on the shoulders resembling a harness being worn. The fur is darker on the back, neck, and sides. White markings may be present on the chest, legs, and tail tip, and a white blaze on the head is also permitted.

Character: Temperament and Behavior

Vallhunds are very kind, obedient dogs that love their owners. This is not just a couch pet, but a real partner. In terms of intellect and working qualities, they often resemble large shepherds trapped in a small body. Some owners jokingly compare their character: they are brave like terriers, but smart and trainable like a German Spitz Medium (Mittelspitz), a group to which they also belong.

At the same time, they are prone to making independent decisions and love freedom and independence, yet their love for humans is stronger. These dogs know how to be grateful; they bond once and for all with one owner, ready to follow them to the ends of the earth. They are prepared to accompany their human everywhere. This breed handles loneliness and isolation from the family poorly.

They are also ready to protect it. If they sense danger, they will instantly alert the owner with a loud bark. It is worth noting: Vallhunds are “chatty” dogs. They like to comment on events with barking, which makes them excellent “doorbells,” but this can become a problem in an apartment building without proper training. They are courageous and fearless, sometimes even too much so – they can challenge a dog significantly larger than themselves, for instance, the size of a Miniature Schnauzer or even bigger, not realizing their own dimensions.

Vallhunds are attentive to small children, showing them only tenderness and care, and they love active games and fun. However, due to the herding instinct, puppies may try to “herd” children by nipping gently at their heels. This behavior needs to be corrected from an early age.

Pros and Cons of the Breed

When choosing a dog, it is important to soberly assess not only its charming appearance but also the peculiarities you will have to live side by side with for years. This is an aboriginal breed that has undergone natural selection for centuries in harsh farm conditions. They lack many of the genetic hereditary diseases characteristic of artificially bred breeds, and these dogs fall ill extremely rarely.

Their hardy organism, stable and strong immunity, as well as dense and thick coat, allow them to easily tolerate low temperatures and even rain. However, like any breed, there are certain nuances worth paying attention to:

Retinopathy: A hereditary eye disease that can lead to vision deterioration. Responsible breeders conduct genetic tests on parents before breeding.

Back problems: Although Vallhunds have short legs and a long back, they suffer from intervertebral disc problems much less frequently than Dachshunds or Bassets. However, excess weight and jumping from great heights can provoke injuries.

Hip dysplasia: Occurs rarely, but screening breeding stock is mandatory in most kennel clubs.

To avoid all sorts of infectious diseases, do not forget to vaccinate your Swedish Vallhund according to the schedule. It also doesn’t hurt to take them to the vet for a routine check-up from time to time, especially after 7-8 years of life.

How to Care for the Swedish Vallhund’s Coat?

These dogs are truly a godsend for people who cannot devote much time to grooming and trimming. Västgötaspets require minimal care, but it must be regular.

Hygienic Procedures

Their coat does not need constant brushing; it is enough to clean the dog once a week with a soft brush or a slicker to remove dead hair and massage the skin. The situation changes during seasonal shedding (spring and fall) – then the Vallhund sheds its undercoat very intensely. During this period, you will have to brush the dog daily, otherwise “tumbleweeds” of fur will become part of your interior decor.

Washing a Västgötaspets frequently is not recommended, as shampoos wash away the natural protective oils, and the coat loses its dirt-repellent properties. Bathe your pet only when heavily soiled. Claws should be trimmed 1-2 times a month if they do not wear down naturally on asphalt. Teeth need cleaning with special dog toothpaste to prevent tartar formation.

Activity and Walks

However, these dogs must spend a long time on walks, preferably in the woods or fields. These animals have herded flocks since ancient times; they love freedom and independence. A “couch” lifestyle is disastrous for them and can lead to destructive behavior (chewing furniture, howling) and obesity.

In addition, they need to run a lot for their health. If you live in the city, be sure to take your Västgötaspets with you on morning jogs or interest them in some game in a large park. They show excellent results in sports such as:

Agility: Speed and agility make them stars on the obstacle course.

Obedience: Obedience and a desire to please help in executing complex commands.

Nosework: Scent work exercises their brain excellently.

Herding: If the opportunity arises, working with sheep will be the best reward for a Vallhund.

Training and Socialization

The Swedish Vallhund learns quickly; this dog is smart, quick-witted, and loyal. Therefore, it tries not to upset its owner and most often follows all the mentor’s instructions. But do not confuse quick wits with automatic obedience. The Vallhund is a thinking dog. If a command seems pointless to it or it has found a more interesting activity, it might “not hear” you the first time.

A mandatory condition for interacting with a Vallhund must be a friendly and trusting relationship. Dogs of this breed are truly versatile; it depends entirely on your upbringing what functions your dog will perform. Early socialization is critical: introduce the puppy to other dogs, people, and city sounds to avoid excessive wariness or barking in the future.

During training, the dog must sense your mood, which should always be good; never take your anger out on your animals. If they fail at something, do not punish them, but try to explain more clearly, as dogs do not understand human language but read intonation and gestures perfectly. The “cookie” method works much better with them than the “whip” method.

Cynologist’s Tip: Vallhunds get bored easily with monotonous repetition. Be persistent and always ensure the command is executed, but come up with interesting tasks, turn training into a game, and then you will get a smart dog that all passersby will admire.

Diet: Key Recommendations

Representatives of this breed are not at all fussy eaters; they will eat whatever you offer them. And this is dangerous! Vallhunds have an excellent appetite and a tendency to gain excess weight. Every extra pound is a colossal load on their short legs and long back. Therefore, portion control is task number one for the owner.

Remember that dogs are carnivores; it is unnatural for them to feed only on porridge and soups. Nutrition can be of two types: natural or high-quality dry food (super-premium or holistic class).

Natural Feeding

The main product in a Vallhund’s diet should be meat. The meat should not be fatty. It is best if it is veal, lamb, rabbit, or turkey. Pork is not recommended due to its high fat content. Meat should be given in small pieces raw (pre-frozen); as ground meat, it is poorly absorbed by the dog’s body and passes straight through.

Offal is very beneficial for four-legged friends: lungs, heart, kidneys, and tripe. Tripe is particularly valuable for its enzymes. It can even completely replace meat in separate meals. Chicken necks and feet (without claws and tubular bones!) are also very useful for dogs, containing a lot of phosphorus and calcium.

Product

Frequency / Notes

Sea fish (freshly frozen)

1-2 times a week. Be sure to remove large bones. Source of Omega-3.

Vegetables (carrot, zucchini, pumpkin)

Daily. Serve raw, grated or steamed.

Fermented dairy products

Cottage cheese, kefir, ryazhenka. Better not to give milk after three months (lactose is not digested).

Grains (rice, buckwheat)

As an addition to meat (no more than 20-30% of the portion).

Oils

Flaxseed or salmon oil. Add to food for coat shine.

In winter and spring, it is useful to give animals vitamin complexes to replenish the lack of nutrients in the dog’s body at this time. Water in the bowl must always be clean and fresh. Do not feed the dog foods that you eat yourself (salty, peppery, smoked). Do not give them a lot of sweets – chocolate is poison for dogs. As a treat, it is best to use hard cheese, a piece of carrot, or apple.

Interesting Facts about the Swedish Vallhund

National Treasure: The Swedish Vallhund is depicted on postage stamps in Sweden and Nicaragua, highlighting its cultural significance.

Universal Soldier: In their homeland, these dogs not only herd sheep, cows, and horses but are also used by the army as search dogs.

Voice of Ancestors: Their bark can vary from a low warning “woof” to a high-pitched squeal, which helped them manage the herd without getting under the hooves.

Rare Beast: Despite growing popularity, the Vallhund remains a fairly rare breed. Without this, the dog can become destructive.

Do they shed a lot?

Yes. They have a double coat, and shedding occurs twice a year quite intensely. In between, the fur sheds moderately. If you need a hypoallergenic dog or a perfectly clean house without effort, this breed is not for you.

How does the Vallhund differ from the Corgi?

Visually they are similiar, but Vallhunds have “longer” legs (they stand higher), a less massive bone structure, and a more athletic build. In character, Vallhunds are often more energetic, have more “drive,” and are closer to working sheepdogs, whereas many Corgi lines are now bred more as decorative companions.

Video about the Breed

Despite its small size, the Swedish Vallhund (Västgötaspets) is a fully-fledged working shephard that matches its larger cousins in courage.
