History of the breed: from Rome to America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the name, the modern English Shepherd<\/strong> was actually formed as a breed in America. However, its genetic roots do indeed reach deep into antiquity, leading us back to the British Isles during the Roman conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story began back in 55 BC, when Julius Caesar’s troops landed in Britain. Along with the legionaries, hardy cattle-driving dogs arrived on the islands, used to guard provisions (livestock) during long marches. When the Roman Empire fell, these dogs remained, mixed with local island breeds, and became the foundation for the majority of modern collies and shepherds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next turn of history occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the first settlers from England, Scotland, and Ireland set off to conquer the New World. They took their most valuable possessions with them – their dogs. In America, these “farm collies” continued to do their job. Local farmers improved the working qualities of English Shepherds by crossing them with old-type collies, Border Collies<\/a>, and Shelties<\/a>. The goal was to create the ideal universal dog that could work in the harsh conditions of American farms, where threats came not only from wolves but also from the specific terrain and climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the 1930s, this breed, often simply called the “farm collie” or “old farm dog,” was one of the most popular in the USA. Official recognition by the United Kennel Club (UKC) came in 1927 (the standard was approved later). Since then, the new breed has proven itself excellent in guarding and watch duties, gaining recognition in the first third of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
