The history of the Aidi goes back to ancient times and is deeply interwoven with the lives of the Berber tribes inhabiting the Atlas Mountains across modern-day Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. While no precise written records of the breed’s origin exist, it is believed these dogs have been around for millennia. Their primary job has always been protection and guarding<\/strong>. Aidis watched over their owners’ camps, families, and herds of sheep and goats, defending them against predators like jackals and other wild animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike many European shepherd dogs, the Aidi was never used as a herding dog to manage livestock movement. It was strictly a guardian breed. They often worked in tandem with faster, more agile dogs like the Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound). The Sloughi would track down prey, while the powerful Aidi would step in to corner or hold it. This partnership was extremely effective in the rugged mountain terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
