Caucasian Shepherd Dogs are a very ancient breed with a history spanning over two thousand years. Their roots reach into the mountain regions of the Caucasus, where they served shepherds for centuries, guarding flocks of sheep from predators such as wolves and bears, as well as from thieves. Tracing their true origin is now very difficult, so only assumptions exist. The most likely version is that their ancestors were ancient Tibetan Mastiffs. There is also a theory that these animals appeared in the ancient state of Urartu, located in the Armenian Highlands. The harsh conditions of the mountainous terrain, the constant struggle for survival, and specific requirements for working qualities formed the breed’s unique character and appearance. Isolation in different regions of the Caucasus led to the emergence of several intra-breed types, which differed slightly in exterior and coat type. For example, the Georgian type is characterized by a more massive build and long coat, while the Azerbaijani and Dagestani types often have shorter hair and a lighter body structure.
