The story of this breed begins in the post-war years when the Soviet Union had a critical need for service dogs. World War II had destroyed a huge number of the canine population, and the national economy and military facilities required reliable security. The order came directly from the USSR Ministry of Defense to the “Red Star” kennel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cynologists faced a difficult task: create a dog that would be undemanding regarding climate conditions (surviving everything from Siberian frosts to extreme heat), possess an appearance terrifying to the enemy, have immense physical strength, but at the same time be highly trainable. The purebreds existing at that time did not satisfy all these requirements simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several donor breeds were chosen for selection. The foundation was formed by two opposites: the good-natured giant Saint Bernard<\/a>, who gave the breed its size and human orientation, and the fierce, distrustful Caucasian Shepherd Dog<\/a>, from whom the Moscow Watchdog inherited its aggression towards strangers and resilience. Russian Pinto Hounds also took part in the “cocktail,” adding endurance and improving the sense of smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a dog with a coarse constitution, developed muscles, and heavy bone structure. The head of this breed is massive, broad in the cranial part, with a deep stop (transition from forehead to muzzle).
