It’s impossible to name an exact date of its appearance, as these dogs developed naturally in the harsh environment of the Pyrenees Mountains on the border between France and Spain. For centuries, they were indispensable helpers to shepherds, managing flocks of sheep. Their work was often carried out in tandem with the large Great Pyrenees, which guarded the flock from predators, while the agile and quick Pyrenean Shepherd was responsible for moving and disciplining the animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long time, the breed existed as numerous local types, which shepherds named after their valleys: Labrit, Arba\u00e7, Bagn\u00e8res Sheepdog, etc. Official recognition only came in the early 20th century. The First and Second World Wars played a crucial role in the breed’s destiny.<\/strong> Thanks to their keen sense of smell, bravery, and intelligence, these small dogs were actively used to search for the wounded on the battlefield, as messengers, and even for mine detection. They saved thousands of lives but also suffered massive losses themselves, pushing the breed to the brink of extinction. After the war, enthusiasts made colosall efforts to restore the population.
