In 1945, as World War II was coming to an end, American soldiers were moving through the Siegen region near the Krumme Furche mountains in Westphalia. The troops had a mascot dog with them- a shaggy, fawn-colored pooch named “Peter.” According to one account, he got lost; in another version, the soldiers gifted him to local resident Ilse Schleifenbaum. Experts now speculate that Peter was a mix, likely containing Grand Basset Griffon Vend\u00e9en, which would explain his characteristic scruffy look and coat texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Schleifenbaum already had a female dog named “Fifi.” While Fifi lacked a pedigree, she phenotypically resembled a classic Wire Fox Terrier<\/strong><\/a>.
